A Complaint About Complaining

While people complain about the state of "Techno" or Electronic Dance Music, I find many worthwhile, funky and futuristic NEW artists out there who appreciate the MUSIC and understand it's relevance as an art form and more.

Perhaps it's not about people not being innovative or futuristic enough, but their lack of resources (money & connections) to be heard on a grand scale.

I was lucky enough to have started early on so timing was partly key for me, as I know it was for many, many artists who continue to thrive today solely based on when they started. But my job still entails searching for and seeking out new and exciting Music to play as well as pushing the boundaries with my own productions.

I could rant on this ALL day but I have way too much work to do the next couple of weeks. I suggest that you ALL continue to search for what you like and not just rely on your own Music and digital promos.

RESPECT to all of you that send me demos and promos! We listen to them ALL so keep creating and Thank You for sharing.

Much like the imprint's other “auditory strikers,” this ambassador for DJ Bone's label favours a maximal style that manages to be both resolutely machine-based and emotionally-charged. With the title track of this EP, Bone offers up a classic slice deep yet uplifting pure techno soul, an understated yet epic melodic groove with twinkling keys and tribal drums are melded together while deep pads and an effected bass synth rise subtly in the background with an intermittent “We Can Feel” vocal sample. Bone subtly weaves these elements around each other, dropping each one out at different points to emphasise the others before gradually bringing them back together, building tension that will keep the crowd hypnotised before finally dropping the kick drum in.

B.1 Activist
This a quirky funky number laced with elements of old-school house. Bone builds an unusual groove with original use of a rhythmic delay effect on a simple kick, clap, hat pattern, and an “Activist, Revolution” vocal refrain, that reminds of the fader and fx tricks Bone uses mid-set, while a one-note bass stab rolls underneath. By cutting up the vocal stab and changing his use of the delay Bone keeps this groove moving, never leaving it sit still, before a electronic horn rises from the background and the track explodes with the introduction of an old-school house bassline and incredibly funky keys. One to drive the crowd crazy, holding and teasing them, before shaking and rocking them.

One of the best VOID shows at The Shelter last year was DJ Bone, a Detroit native who flew into town and assaulted three turntables (listen to that set here). Bone's an uncompromising kind of guy, a purist, a producer in his own right, and a damn good DJ. Plus, he's got some good Detroit stories and some militant opinions.

SmartShanghai sat down with DJ Bone at the excellent Hello Two bar on Hengshan to talk about techno perversions, why America doesn't get techno, and the next shit.

SmSh: How did you show in Shanghai go last year?

DJ Bone: Ah, that shit was amazing -- that was off the hook.

SmSh: How did that all happen? Some Scottish guy emails you up and says, “Hey, I’m from Scotland, come to China?

DJ Bone: [Laughs]. Yeah, we did a little background check on them. Saw that they were an underground operation... the main thing we look at is the promoters -- you know, their point of view -- and the club. If they’re at a venue that’s “the place to be” then we’re very leery and usually I won’t go. But if it's someone trying to build something, or its someone doing it for a purpose then I’m really inspired by that and I want to do it. I don’t want to be the guy coming into the club that’s already established, take my money and then that’s it. I want to go somewhere where people are trying to make a difference.

But yeah it was good. The crowd -- yeah, I could play whatever I wanted. They were there to hear good music so it wasn’t like, “this is a techno night”. Sure, maybe some people weren’t happy but the way I look at it is if everyone loves you, you’re doing something not right. I expect that. I call it divide and conquer. I expect people to really get what I’m doing and love it and we have a good time. If not then, to me, they can beat it. They can walk off the floor, they can leave the club, whatever, I don’t care.

That’s what it is. Divide and conquer. I’m for the people who are there for the music and that’s what I’m about and that’s what I’m going to give them.

SmSh: It was one of the high-points for the VOID guys here, your show at The Shelter.

DJ Bone: Yeah, it was one of the best gigs I had all year. I was ecstatic. It reminded me seeing something that was untapped...

SmSh: So, in other interviews you talk a lot about international DJs… DJs from Europe, wherever, biting on the early Detroit Techno sound and repackaging it. Is that something you still see happening today in a major way?

DJ Bone: Yeah, major way. They might not want to admit it. Well, they piggyback and as soon as they felt they were at the pinnacle, they drop it -- drop the association. Everyone was describing their shit, “it’s Detroit-esque”, it’s “Detroit-lite”, it’s “Detroit-inspired”. But as soon as they got to the point where they thought they were the shit, then they dropped it: “I’m my own person, I like to sound different...”

Bullshit.

That’s the same motherfucker who was coming to Detroit and taking notes, watching people, know what I mean? Fuck that.

And it might come across as harsh when I say it but it’s been like that...

SmSh: Have you heard of Motor City Drum Ensemble?

DJ Bone: Yes.

SmSh: I think it’s like a dude from Stuttgart but he’s got the 70’s afro-chic packaging..

DJ Bone: Oh yeah... I’m really upset with that. On the record, I was so upset when I met Terry Lee Brown Jr. Have you heard of him?

SmSh: No.

DJ Bone: He was doing house music. I think he’s out of Germany, I don’t know, somewhere in Europe. His logo is this black guy, right, with big lips and a short little afro... it wasn’t a caricature that offended me, it was just somebody that looked kinda soulful, and everybody who bought his record thought that the picture was him.

That’s him, you know. I met him in London and I just went off. They introduced me and it was some tall white guy from Germany.

SmSh: Looking like one of the dudes in Kraftwerk?

DJ Bone: So, straight up, I was like why the fuck do you have this black guy on your records -- they couldn’t believe I said that -- but that’s just wrong...

SmSh: What did he say?

DJ Bone: He said that he didn’t want to be judged on what he looked like, “it’s about the music”, whatever... yeah, but then put the music out there, don’t put a fake-ass face out there. Go ahead and be faceless.

But I think people use Detroit -- they may not see it this way, a lot of people say, “we use it as inspiration” -- but explain to me why 80% of techno that’s coming out right now, they’re using the sounds that we used 20 years ago. The dubby-type, heavy Korg… and they want to claim it as something new. If you use the sounds in a new manner then yes, but if you’re just almost, almost imitating what’s been done 15 years ago, then there’s nothing new about that.

There are some innovative people who use older sounds. So, I’m not against using those sounds in general. I’m against the mindset “I’m Detroit” when you’re not from Detroit. I’m “Detroit-esque”. I’m “Detroit-inspired”, but you never visited the city.

How can you be inspired by something that you’ve never even seen first hand. That’s ridiculous to me. Ridiculous. To be inspired is to be there and have an encounter, and that’s not the case for a lot of these guys.

I mean something that’s classic will never die and you can always innovate. When I DJ, when I make music, it’s inspiration. I was inspired by Jeff [Millls], UR, Mojo, Kenny Larkin, Carl Craig, but Detroit is different and a lot of what happens in Europe -- and I see this first hand so I can speak on it -- I see a lot of guys trying, trying their best to sound like someone from Detroit. I’m not saying all of them but a lot of people try to sound like someone from Detroit.

To me, that’s not progression, that’s not innovation, that’s copying. If you are inspired by someone then you take the best qualities and improve on what inspired you. In Detroit, even to this day, if you make a track and it sounds like someone else and everyone you played it for said it sounds like someone else, you throw that track away. You’re not proud. You don’t say “oh sweet, I got a track that sounds like Rob Hood”. You throw it away because you’re embarrassed to sound like someone else in Detroit.

If you think about all the prominent guys from Detroit, you can’t take two and say that “these two guys sound alike.” Play a Kenny Larkin track, then play a Rob Hood, then play UR, then play DJ Bone, then play Carl Craig, then play Shake. None of those sound alike. We strive to be different.

So when someone says “I’m Detoit-esque” or “this record is in the Detroit style” -- the Detroit style is light years ahead, so how can you be the Detroit style. Detroit is the next shit and it always has been. It’s around the corner, down the block and when people catch up, they catch up.

Inspired by Detroit. Okay. So people don’t get upset, here’s some: D-tron, Phase when I hear his music I hear Detroit, but it’s a new version, its something that’s progression. It’s not some copy cat shit. It’s genuine progression...

SmSh: Do you keep tabs on the trends in Europe / the US?

DJ Bone: Yeah, I keep tabs...

SmSh: It feels like there’s a new techno genre invented every two weeks...

DJ Bone: Yeah, I never keep tabs on genres, I keep tabs on people. But it’s only as homework... not necessarily someone I care about, it just almost like... it’s almost like Swine Flu. You may not be looking to catch the Swine Flu... but it’s nice that you know it’s out there...

SmSh: Know how to avoid it.

DJ Bone: ...know how to avoid it. What the conditions are if someone has it, etc, etc. So I do my homework, and if they say “deep house is the new minimal”, I know about it. That’s my job. But it’s more about looking at the people.

When they said, “oh minimal, minimal”. I say Richie Hawtin versus Rob Hood, you know what I mean? Weight the options. When they say “deep house”, I say okay your boy or whoever they’re saying deep house is and Kenny Dixon Jr. You tell me what deep house is. No contest as to what the real shit is.

That’s just me though -- my background, my history -- it’s not being cocky, it’s just I can’t say that this DJ is a good techno DJ when I grew up listening to Jeff Mills and Derrick May.

I’ve heard the best techno DJs. I have.

SmSh: How is Detroit these days?

DJ Bone: Bad. Bad shape right now.

SmSh: How so?

DJ Bone: All the clubs are commercial. Underground parties don’t exist...

SmSh: Has there just been too much attention for too long and it’s just been washed out? Not enough newer stuff coming up?

DJ Bone: It’s a combination... I could blame Detroit for not putting out new music. I mean, we have people touring the world every week, but they haven’t released a record in 15 years... or even if it’s like seven years. That’s wrong. How are you progressing the city? All you’re doing is living off the past and padding you wallet because you don’t have a retirement fund. And no offense, a lot of these people I idolized when I was younger. But if you want to represent the real Detroit, it’s not even if you still live in Detroit. Jeff Mills will always be Detroit. Rob Hood. And these people don’t even live there anymore but they’re always Detroit and they’re making new shit. So I admire these guys for making new music and releasing new music.

But a lot of guys are touring the world off of shit they did 10 to 20 years ago. And that’s not Detroit. Detroit is innovating. Detroit is the next shit, you know what I’m saying? So you either have to put up the music yourself or nurture younger guys who are doing the new shit. And that’s what we do [at Bone’s label, Subject Detroit].

A lot of the cats, the younger brothers, are now are inspired by hip hop, so it’s really hard to get someone who is 18, 17 to do some Detroit Techno. They want to be hip hop. They want to be Jay Z. They don’t want to be Juan Atkins. You know... They want to be Usher, you know what I’m saying. It’s almost like trying to get them to do some funky Motown shit. They want to be T-Pain...

SmSh: I read this thing on the internet about Detroit Techno and it had this interesting line that I wanted to get your opinion on: “It’s a strange irony that techno is regarded as an American music in just about every country in the world except America.” Do you agree with that? Why don’t American audiences understand techno?

DJ Bone: Two reasons: a) it was started by black people -- that’s the first and most important reason. And b) it wasn’t easily marketable.

Now, if you go back and look at major styles of music that were started by black people, and the biggest example is jazz -- jazz had to go to Switzerland, France, all across Europe and then filter back into America, and even then it was only select black people and Benny Goodman and Big Band shit. They even tried to change the name, “Big Band” -- it was jazz. Same with Detroit Techno. It went across the globe and they tried to repackage it as a different kind of techno.

The U.S. is a microwave society -- I have a project coming out called Microwave Society it’s about how instant everything has to be, and calculated -- so the microwave society is, “How can we market it? How can we make money?”

And they looked at techno and said, “We can’t”. So that was it.

SmSh: It was too much in a club environment? Not broad enough?

DJ Bone: There were just no stars. There were no faces. So how do you market music like that? They tried with Chemical Brothers, they tried with Crystal Method, and they tried with Prodigy -- you know, smack my bitch up and a bunch of fire and shit.

They even tried with Aphex Twin... of course he was like fuck you guys and did want he wanted to do anyways. [Laughs.] He did this thing, I think it was called “Remixes for Cash” -- I love that shit.

SmSh: Would you say that these days America is learning to love the DJ? DJ AM... Steve Aoki...

DJ Bone:

SmSh: [Laughs.] What? They’re not DJs?

DJ Bone: I got nothing against DJ AM. I’m all about someone making a living, but to capitalize and exploit the music. I mean, I’ve seen some bullshit. It’s like the last concern the club has is about the music. As long as the place is packed, they could care less what the DJ is playing. It’s like everything is the opposite. The music used to be the focus, and it didn’t matter about the venue. It could be an old-ass warehouse, an abandoned building, squatters, a field, as long as you had a decent sound system… but you had to have the best music.

Now you have to have the club, the place to be, the best-dressed crowd, the best door policy, the best drinks, and then after all that is the music... the biggest name DJs. And that’s worldwide. There’s very few select pockets of people who, like Public Enemy said, fight the power. Fight the system.

I mean I could easily wake up tomorrow and say, “You know what? I feel like being famous. I’m going to start playing minimal.” And I could go and get a computer and get the latest software and just cheer lead and wave my hands and blow kisses, etc, and I would make ten times what I make right now and be a million times more famous...

But to me you know there’s a direct link between technology and lowering the bar. When it comes to DJing. You don’t have to be skillful anymore, you don’t have to have great track selection... all you need to do is buy the top 10 or 20 releases that have feedback on, and then you load them into your laptop, bring it all with you beat match from song to song, leave it for seven minutes and beat match into the next song.

The first thing you learn to do when you’re a DJ is beat match, so you telling me 10 20 years into your career you're still beat matching? Only? What is that?

Now people pay their money, they want to be in the place to be, and they just accept what is being thrown at them. If everyone else around them is cheering, they cheer. It’s not based on, “Do I like the song? Do I like the mix?” They look at their friends and say, “Oh they’re enjoying it, I better pump my fist.” That’s ridiculous. It sucks when you go from growing up listening to Derrick May, waiting for the new song -- everybody trusted Derrick to bring the newest, hottest shit -- going from that and now being in a club seeing DJs being afraid to play anything unfamiliar. No one wants to break a new song; everyone wants to step forward at exactly the same time.

Fuck that. That’s ridiculous. That’s why I don’t play the big clubs. I don’t do interviews with the big magazines because everybody does. That’s the norm. I’m not normal. I’m far from normal.

SmSh: That’s in the U.S. or everywhere?

DJ Bone: Everywhere. People feel they have to accept what’s being given to them. That’s not the case. Growing up in Detroit we knew how to be independent because we had the first DJ in the US playing in free format -- The Electrifying Mojo. He played only what he thought was good. It was a black station but when he came on it wasn’t black, it wasn’t white -- we were listening to Pet Shop Boys, B-52s, Parliament Funkadelic, Juan Atkins, RUN DMC, Brian Eno -- so we had everything, the whole spectrum -- Jimi Hendrix, “Star Spangled Banner”.

SmSh: That’s a weird mix right there.

DJ Bone: He just played whatever he thought was good and what we needed to hear. He would talk all the time. Talk, and talk, and talk. But he was so deep that Prince would send him every single extended version, every single album like two weeks before it would come out in the store. And he would tell him, “play this on the radio and get everyone to record it.” And Mojo would say, “Get your cassette recorders ready, I got the new Prince coming up.”

I remember he played Around the World in a Day in its entirety. He didn’t say a word, he just played it. He said, “Get your cassette players ready.” He was doing a show, and out of the blue he had a call -- he never takes calls -- and he goes, “Uh I just uh wanna uh say that we have a special guest.”

He was really flustered, which he never was, because he was always really smooth. He’s like, “we got Prince on the line”. Prince called after his concert in Detroit -- called Mojo from his dressing room to talk and he was like, “Yeah, Detroit is like my second home, I get so much love here. From now on every concert tour that I kick off will be in Detroit.”

And sure as shit, every time he’s started in Detroit. He would send Mojo everything. I have extended versions of everything that only Mojo had access too... it was ridiculous. So that was Mojo -- he has a free format and could play whatever he wanted -- Cameo, ABC, whatever.

It was so dope to be in the ghetto and hear “Rock Lobster”. You know in the middle of all this black music you hear and all these black people are like “Oh, Rock Lobster!” Everybody’s down on the ground and shit and then it would kick back up and everybody’s up. In the ‘hood! [Laughs.]

SmSh: And one of the singers from the B-52s did that song with Iggy Pop. More Detroit. There you go.

DJ Bone: See! We’re ahead. We’re individuals. If someone wants to copy, so be it -- when someone is trying to be Detroit, as opposed to being influenced by Detroit that is.

SmSh: My tape is running out but I wanted to ask about this compilation, “The Lost Tribe of Techno” on Subject Detroit...

DJ Bone: Actually, my manager slash booking agent slash fiancé came to me with the idea for a compilation. I had the name for a long time -- “The Lost Tribe of Techno”, and it’s basically techno to the core. You know. These are the true roots of what Detroit Techno is, but they’ve still progressed. But it’s almost like we’re lost or in limbo because sometimes we don’t get the time of day or booked into the big clubs or whatever. But it’s still more than valid, you know what I mean. These don’t have the status as one of the originators, and it’s not minimal or Euro-Detroit or whatever you want to call it.

We’re kinda forgotten. So we’re the lost tribe of techno, and the amazing thing is, this CD has been selling like crazy and it makes me so happy to know that people still want to hear this. Even vinyl sales. People say vinyl is dead but we’ve been doing great vinyl sales.

It lets us know that we’ve been on and we’re still on the right track. I think it’s amazing. I think it’s beyond amazing, so we’re going to keep doing it.

There’s always going to be people lost in electronic music.

Mister X – Balance
Mister X provides a perfect opening to this, the first Soul Satellite from Subject Detroit, with a mesmerising excursion into unconventional melodies. This hypnotic beat less masterpiece builds slowly combining gothic choir pads with melancholic keys offset against a rolling almost oriental riff underlain by a deep bass whilst minor chords and rising background suggest a voyage into the unknown. The overall effect is a simultaneous evocation of a mythical past with an unknown future frontier. Stunning.

Metro Unit - Inner Senses
The first of Belgian duo Trish Van Eynde and Sam Ostyn aka Metro Unit‟s contributions picks things up where Mister X leaves off lifting proceedings straight onto the dance floor. In this day and age of relentless and monotonous dub, dark, and drear, the refreshing soulful sonic blast that is „Inner Senses‟ hits you with classic Detroit strings, a mutating analogue bass line, and uplifting pianos, which are reminiscent of old-school house at it‟s best. This is one track that will uplift your soul, help you forget life‟s worries, and leave you with a grin from ear to ear, and isn‟t that what great dance music is meant to be all about!

Orlando Voorn – Closer
Next up Orlando Voorn cooks up some deep, jacking, and downright sexy grooves with a track that straddles the divide between deep house and techno. Dirty claps, snares, gated synths and keys trick you into thinking this is going to be a rough techno trip. That is until the arrival of a classic deep house bass line, verbed keys and trumpet licks, which lock things down into a deep and moody groove interspersed by a repeated vocal refrain “Free your Body, Free your Soul, Closer”. Music to lose yourself in on the dance floor at five o‟clock in the morning.

Aux 88 - We Make Beats
Two of the undisputed kings of Detroit electro return with some of their trademark alien beats and vocals, transmitted straight from an interstellar satellite aimed directly at a mutant stereo. Imagine the sound of an android programmed with a funk virus; these guys make BEATS.

Trench – Denouement
''Back in the day”, says Trench, “there was no right or wrong, there was just music. You grabbed what you could and gleaned the parts that touched you”. Such a conviction to artistic expression, uninhibited by populist trends and transient hype, is clearly evidenced by this track. Defying convention Trench melds a complex yet spacious soundscape of unorthodox strings, keys, and pads, which subtly evolve over an understated yet driving rhythm track, with a deep booming kick drum anchored by a marching clap and rolling snares interspersed with intermittent cymbals. Old-school creativity locates the sonically unfamiliar within the familiar, transporting you back to 88 whilst remaining both innovative and contemporary.

DJ Nasty - Groove Junkie
From the outset, deep toms signal the arrival of the ghetto-funk master Dj Nasty who with characteristic ease brings an unassuming kick, tom, clap, and pattern, together with discreet strings and stabbing keys to create a groove, which is more than the sum of its parts. This proves that a true groove junkie doesn‟t need hundreds of soft-synths and effects. They don‟t need airplane take-off build-ups or a constant stream of meaningless edits to rock the house. They just need the funk!

Rennie Foster - GTC (Klaina Remix)
Fast emerging from the overcrowded mass of DJs and Producers out there by way of Real talent and his true love for soulful electronic music, Belgian DJ Klaina takes on the task of re-editing Rennie Foster‟s “Good Time Charlie”, an inspired combination of classic house and contemporary techno, which was released on Subject Detroit last year to widespread acclaim and accompanied by remixes from Dj Bone and Aux 88. While the deep bass line on this remix is suggestive of the original, stylistically, Klaina completely transforms the track, taking it in a deeper direction, with atmospheric strings working in concert with cleverly interwoven open hats and percussion, which lend the track a skipping rhythmic feel. The memorable “Zoom, Zoom” vocal sample is used in an interesting fashion that perfectly compliments the track‟s other elements.

Niko Marks - All of Me
Truly inspirational house music from an amazingly talented and highly versatile musician. Niko combines rolling percussion and an incredibly funky bass-guitar line with a powerful female vocal, which encapsulates both the agony and the ecstasy of human emotion, to spellbinding effect. Funky, hypnotising, captivating, and soulful, this track is destined to be a future house classic.

Stephen Brown - Like This
Continuing on the Satellites‟ musical orbit, legendary Scottish producer Stephen Brown takes control, serving up some rough and rocking techno that brings the jack of Chicago on a ride to the 313. Aimed squarely at the dance floor, follows the less is more principle, with a minimal amount of elements. However, one thing this aint is minimal in a contemporary sense. This is raw with cut-up vocal snippets and claps riding along tough, juddering kick and bass-line with each of the elements dropping in and out in a perfectly timed sequence, which gives the track movement. This is timeless in the sense that this could be 96 or 09‟. What year it actually is when listening to this track is irrelevant because this is techno at its purest, rolling to the beat of its own drum and not to the mindless clapping of the mass-market.

Metro Unit - Journey to Aphelion
Metro Unit hit us with their second contribution to the Satellite. Following on from the exhilarating “Inner Senses”, Trish and Sam take us off on an electro powered journey into the cosmos. Intricate rhythms merge with complex pads, strings, and an old-school bass-line that turns the Satellite back towards earth on a collision course with Detroit, along with a hint of acid lurking threateningly in the background which offsets and indeed intensifies the epic, nay dare it be said, euphoric feel of the other musical elements. This is the sound of future electronic music at its very, very best.

DJ Bone - True2daRoots
This is a slamming update of Bone‟s massively successful “No Sleep (True to the Roots)” which was released on Sect Records last year. For this rework Bone toughens proceedings up considerably stripping back some of the original elements whilst concentrating and intensifying others. He places a chorus-like effect on the central hook of the original giving it more force and bringing it to the forefront, whilst cutting back the vocals to the “True2daRoots of Detroit techno soul” refrain. He inserts jagged hats and heavy building snares, which are reminiscent of those used on “Body Bags” using short, expertly timed breaks, and drops to tease, reinvigorate, and add momentum. This is going to make even the most forgetful of bandwagon jumpers sit-up and go “holy s***” this is why we started dancing to techno in the first place.

DJ Bone - Music (Aaron-Carl Remix)
Through his legendary „Music Speech‟ Bone gives a look into own soul and to what drives him to create, to progress but stay true to the roots of the music that he lives, and to stand up against those who are destroying it. “We live for this Shit. This is our Shit…This is our Life”. Here is where he speaks his mind on everything that has been the near ruination of true electronic music. Drugs, egos, gimmicks, hype, and the pre-packaged mass-marketing of soulless, funk less, and meaningless rubbish which has been forced upon the public by DJs with no passion for music and who rely upon technology to provide them with what they attempt to pass off as funk. “What happened to the Music? I remember when we used to dance. No lights. No fights. Just Soul…No gimmicks. No hype…What happened to the Music? What happened to the Soul?” On this remix, Aaron Carl takes up the formidable challenge of providing such a profound message with the soul and funk it deserves. As Bone asks in the immortal refrain: “Are you getting funky with the machines? Or do the machines make you funky? AC is definitely getting funky with the machines, giving us a master-class in real Detroit techno and house, which uses the vocal as an actual element of the music helping to convey its meaning, rather than simply randomly throwing it over the top of sounds to which it does not relate. In the end, this is what Bone is fighting for, the music, its true meaning, the funk, and the soul.

Trish Van Eynde- Mr.Maher
TVE provides a fitting close to the first Satellite, which looks to both the past and the future. Moody pads are counterbalanced by high twinkling keys whilst a weighty kick and Trish‟s trademark old-school bass lines and synth stabs, which she masterfully combines with morphing affected hi-hats, push the track forward. This is dynamic, sexy, feminine techno that oozes soul and funk that stays true to the roots of the music. This is a track that will compel people to dance and smile, forget about their worries and to rejoice in the music and the groove, until the next soul Satellite begins its ascent in the near future…

Subject Detroit: Mission Shanghai

Detroit Techno’s enduring power to shake dance floors all over the world was showcased once again as DJ Bone brought his three-deck turntable-trickery to Void, for his first ever appearance in China, and Void’s third Detroit flavored guest following Nomadico of Underground Resistance and, of course, Rob Hood.

Detroit Techno’s enduring power to shake dance floors all over the world was showcased once again as DJ Bone brought his three-deck turntable-trickery to Void, for his first ever appearance in China, and Void’s third Detroit-flavored guest following Nomadico of Underground Resistance and, of course, Rob Hood.

Shanghai_Ultra lined up, dropping a spot of dubstep and bleepy techno, slowly warming up the crowd before handing the controls over to Nat Alexander who stepped the dance floor up a gear. Mr A was on top form to say the least and played one of his most blinding sets yet, dropping an intriguing but expertly-crafted selection to set the stage up for Void’s guest.

By the time Bone took over, anticipation was at peak level – and the atmosphere soon followed. Starting off with his famous Music Speech, Bone announced his arrival and let fly with Fix “Flash” which got the beats underway, and from then on in, anyone on the dance floor had difficultly leaving after that point. Bone rolled out an uptempo set, checking the likes of Der Klang Der Famile, Surgeon, Mills and dropping the electro number “City Limits” by The Advent at one point. By the time the all-time classic “Numbers” by Kraftwerk emerged amid the three-deck madness, Bone’s virtuoso musical tour was complete. Tracks from his Subject Detroit imprint were of course spun, as was the Samuel L Session’s amazing bass-heavy take on Bone’s music speech – which is yet to be released.

As expected, Shanghai’s diverse international dancing crowd was out in force – the Void crew encountered Korean, Japanese, Swedish, Croatian, Columbian, Spanish, American, British, French, Hong Konger, Australian, Canadian and of course Chinese revelers. Also amongst the crowd were some refugees from Sascha’s gig at the mainstream JJ2 club who found out, just in the nick of time, where the real party was at.

As the clock struck 5am, Bone dropped his final track to a round of applause from the still-dancing party hardcore.

Subject Detroit, mission Shanghai, accomplished.

Criticizing DJ Magazine’s annual Top 100 DJs poll has almost become a sport, but Detroit’s DJ Bone might cause a few problems for DJ agents targeting China with his recent criticism of the annual list.

Ahead of a gig in Shanghai tomorrow night, DJ Bone told shanghaiist.com that the Top 100 was just “popularity contest and less about which DJs are good.”

Chinese club promoters, like in most countries in Asia, quite often use the Top 100 poll as a reference guide when choosing who to book and how much to pay international DJs.

Electronic music’s development in China, like in Asia’s tiger economies in the 1990s, has undergone rapid growth fueled by a burgeoning middle class.

But that growth has in part been helped by cigarette and alcohol sponsorship.

The large promotional budgets that this type of sponsorship affords party and festival organisers has led a climate of reliance on highly paid international DJs, at the cost of supporting local talent.

“The Top 100 DJs list reflects a very narrow view of what is supposedly good - those lists are only about marketing products and selling magazines,” said Bone. “I don’t place any stock in those lists because it should be about the DJ connecting to the people through music, not fashion, hype or gimmicks. Popular does not equal good.”

If the Top 100 loses its credibility in China, some promoters there are going to have to find a new reference point for determining the pay scale of DJs.

A highly respected African-American DJ and producer, from the most influential city in the history of electronic music, has criticized the ranking system which is used by many clubs in China, particularly Shanghai, when deciding which DJs to bring to the country, as being useless.

Detroit’s DJ Bone, who will make his China debut in Shanghai on Saturday night with local promoters Void (of which this Shanghaiist is a member), says the Top-100 DJ list, compiled by prominent dance music industry publication DJ Magazine, is simply a “popularity contest and less about which DJs are good.”

Mainstream clubs in Shanghai regularly publish adverts which push their guest DJ's inclusion in the list as the main selling point. But the list itself is shaped by commercial factors meaning that talented cult underground DJs who spend time honing their skills and abilities instead of their marketability, are not included, resulting in China missing out on some of the best electronic music talent the world has to offer.

DJ Bone said, “The top 100 DJ list reflects a very narrow view of what is supposedly good - those lists are only about marketing products and selling magazines. Ironically, one Top-100 ranked DJ who will be performing in Shanghai at the same time as DJ Bone is UK stalwart Sasha. Bone said, “The difference between us is I look at him as more of a status DJ, due to popularity from press and marketing and I see myself more as the people's DJ. I've never been about the fame and fortune DJing could bring me, just my love for the art of DJing and spreading new, soulful sounds across the globe,” adding, “I also think that my style of DJing is way more exciting than Sasha's for real!”

Sasha’s computer-based setup has caused him problems in Shanghai in past appearances, but DJ Bone’s three-deck skills leave him immune to PC problems. He said “I developed my three turntable technique to specifically create two things that I think are missing in most DJ sets...excitement and the unknown. I felt that there was always a lack of action, that the DJ was just acting as a human jukebox or "record-player". They drop the needle and start cheerleading to the crowd (see Top-100 DJ list leader Armin Van Buuren doing just that in Shanghai two weeks ago) to cover up the lack of excitement they could produce physically. There was / is also no anticipation at gigs anymore...no element of wondering what the DJ will do next. This inspired me to try and push things ahead of the curve as far as what people expect from a DJ.”

Having been pushing Detroit Techno for over ten years Bone has built an impressive discography on his own label, Subject Detroit, and prestigious record labels such as Juan Atkins’ Metroplex, and Belgium-based Music Man. Very much true to his roots, Bone maintains that Detroit is as relevant as ever to electronic music. He said of his label, “Subject Detroit started as an outlet for me to release music I felt I needed for my DJ sets, because I didn't hear what I needed on most other labels. It was also a way to focus on the music itself and not just the marketing of the music,”

The automotive manufacturing heart of Detroit was ripped out years ago, creating a host of economic and social problems which still exist to this day. But the deprivation and urban decay which followed created an environment which spawned one of the most significant musical movements in recent history. Bone believes the city itself is a huge inspiration to him, just as it has been for other luminary DJs from Detroit such as Jeff Mills, Derrick May, Juan Atkins, Robert Hood (who played in Shanghai last June) and Carl Craig.

To get a feel for the connection between the city and the music, check out DJ Bone’s track “Change” on YouTube - a song about self-belief and staying true to one’s desired path in life, set against a montage of sepia-filtered photographs of Detroit and its various landmarks, such as the Renaissance Center. Bone said “Subject Detroit is about the future of sound expanded from its original inspiration (Detroit). It's like a soundtrack for the city, its people and its places. Subject Detroit is all about the vibe and the essence of Detroit. It's like the air that the city breathes in and out. We want to reach anyone with an open mind for sound, soul and melody. Subject Detroit is Advanced Black Music.”

The connection between location and music, and the influence environment can have on artists, has been important for many genres. In Shanghai, the electronic music scene is still developing, but in recent years, native Shanghainese producers such as B6 and MHP have emerged, thanks to the local focus of the Antidote crew. DJ Bone’s thinks the Shanghai scene can benefit from developing its own style. “My advice would be to develop your own sound and push it as far into the future funk as you can. Not just with technology but with soul and spirit. And the main thing is to NOT COPY ANYONE...be original and stay true to your own vibe!”

And it’s a lack of innovation in the scene which frustrates Bone, who criticizes artists who are living on past glories. “The funny thing is that all of the producers I used to admire are only DJs now because they don't make music anymore. And somehow they still get booked based on very old releases. It's almost like a greatest hits tour or just nostalgia. I only look forward nowadays so I really enjoy Stephen Brown, Trench, Mister X (Detroit), Mark Williams and a bunch of unknown guys from Detroit I'm mentoring right now. I call them my ‘Tru Warriors’.”

However, Bone said of his upcoming show in Shanghai, “I have wanted to play in China for quite some time now. From what I understand, the crowds at VOID are very open to new sounds and are not genre specific. If it's good...it's good kind of mindset. I like that a lot!”

Most of all for Bone, its about one thing only - the music. He concluded, “I'm on a mission to give people what they've been missing for so long. No magazines, no lights, no fights, no drugs....just soul....all soul. Thanks and get ready Shanghai!”

This Saturday two dance DJs will battle it out for your heard- earned kuai. DJ Bone comes out spinning soulful Detroit techno on 3 turntables at The Shelter, and DJ Sasha hits back with progressive trance off a computer at JJ2.

Bone clocks in at 132 to 138 bpm. While not a household name, Bone is plenty respected for his turntable skills and proudly Detroit techno groove. He’s lean, hungry, and contending for 60 RMB.

Sasha clocks in at 128 bpm on the nose. He’s been reigning champ for a while, and comes to town promoting a new album. But maybe the years are getting to him; he’s a bit heavy at 350 RMB.

Venues will be a big factor in the decision. The Shelter is celebrating one year of their special emphysema- inducing brand of musical diversity and cheap cocktails. Bone is fighting from the shadows.

JJ2 is aiming squarely at the mainstream with guns blazing. Sasha’s throwing down tracks under some serious neon light.

Which artist will take home the title for Saturday Night Champ? Both, probably, for their respective crowds. The bottom line is despite the cold snap you better be dancing on Saturday.

DJ Bone from Detroit will be performing at The Shelter this Saturday as part of their one-year anniversary shaker, so here are some MP3s of his so you can get all prepped for it.

DJ Bone is associated with the various permutations of classic Detroit techno, and has, over the years, held a number of residencies in clubs around that city. He still sites the originators of the genre as his key influences and is of the ardently independent mindset. He describes himself as "an uncompromising, hype hating, 100% independent, real Detroit native-come-auditory striker and soul controller that cannot be bought".

In all his press shit, DJ Bone makes a point of separating himself from "producers" by specifying that he is a proper vinyl DJ that utilizes three turntables in his live performances, so expect a purist set from a DJ that eschews "Hollywood production, special effects, video images, and smoke."

DJ Bone performs curtesy of VOID, a group of locally-based techno DJs/promoters. With this show, VOID continue their streak of hosting classically-minded Detroit techno DJs that link the origins of the genre in the 80's with the latest sounds coming out of the metropolis today.

What sets apart DJ Bone and, indeed, his label Subject Detroit, from the pack is the rawness and energy coursing through their numerous releases. In “No Sleep (True To Da Roots),” Bone’s jaw-dropping EP for Sect Records, this was embodied in the hands-on method with which the tracks were arranged, each gridless rhythm and slight imperfection reminding listeners that humans, not machines, were in charge. His LWE podcast, assembled largely from the Subject catalog, found the unpolished aesthetic equally charming on a broader scale. So it should come as little surprise that “Circus World EP,” one of DJ Bone’s four Subject releases so far this year, makes good with a similar approach to pumping techno.

A close cousin to “Higher” from the aforementioned “No Sleep,” “Circus World” layers a familiar galloping synth progression atop widely reverberating percussion (as if recorded in an empty factory), churning with mechanical energy. DJ Bone’s weary and distorted tenor, which laments artists who “replicate” and a “circus world” with no chance of escape, contrasts with unrelenting progressions and the metallic upstroke intensifying with each passing measure. Only the hope that music and dancing offer some reprieve from everyday life keeps the existential dread at bay; the instrumental mix is perhaps a bit friendlier to fragile minds. But for all the trepidation of side A, “One More Tune” offers a perfect tonic on the flipside, based heavily upon a sample of a particularly determined Edinburgh crowd who refused to leave the dance floor. Its looped whistles and chants, played against a swooning shade of synth pads and flanged percussion, embody the sort of atmosphere DJs and dancers alike crave from a night out. Musically unguarded and unabashedly emotional, the “Circus World EP” proves again why DJ Bone should be anything but one of Detroit’s best kept secrets. (post by Steve Mizek)

I want to thank EVERYBODY who had our back on this! Your messages and e-mails helped prompt a very, very quick response from the people at Be Chosen Records.

BTW - Subject Detroit had attempted to contact Be Chosen several times before mentioning anything online.

They have now finally contacted us back, apologized and want to fix things ASAP. They also agreed to halt sales of the release out of respect until we agree on a solution.

I have never been against anyone sampling or copying other music as a tribute, to pay homage or because what they sampled was just too funky to resist. But...if it stinks of lack of creativity or just trying to cash-in then it bugs me. Too many of my favorite tracks and artists (Good Girls, Public Enemy, Ice Cube, Shades of Jae) are sample-based for me to be anti-sampling.

So to all my peoples and fam from all over the globe that took time out to write about this (even those who thought I was whining or groaning), THANK YOU. No matter how you felt about it, it just shows me there are still plenty of music lovers out there.

MUSIC speech used without permission!

Just want to alert you:

It was brought to my attention today by one of my good people abroad that the label "Be Chosen" had released a vinyl EP with three songs containing my entire Music Speech from SUBX01! I license to people, labels and projects where I see fit but to use my shit (not even sampling it but the whole thing just over their track) without even asking me was & is jacked-up (way wrong).

This is just to let everyone know that I NEVER gave them permission to use my vocals, have never even heard of the label and was never approached by anyone from be chosen.

Needless to say I am not very happy about this and action is being taken. Any help you can give me by spreading the word about this label and what they did would be very helpful! They don't know me or how I conduct business....

When and where did you make the mix?

DJ Bone: I did this mix live in my studio last week (9/8/08). I was motivated by something interesting I read so I jumped up and did the mix. They’re always better when I’m inspired.

What’s the concept behind the mix?

The concept was to bring the moodier side of techno into a dancefloor mentality. It’s not bang-bang-bang, but it definitely makes you want to move. And once you’re moving you start to feel the emotion come out of each song. So I’m basically mixing emotions on this mix.

Who are a few of your favorite DJs and why?

I have to be completely honest with you about this, there are very few DJs I admire. This is because of all the great DJs I witnessed in Detroit when techno was kicking off. Those years spoiled me for life.

I always dig when Derrick May plays. I also love listening to Laurent Garnier, Theo Parrish, Aaron Carl, Deetron and Ken Ishii. I think DJ Bone isn’t half bad either!

What can we expect from you for the rest of the year?

I am going to finish up my new album titled Another Language and release another mix CD. We also have a couple of compilations coming out and a few secret projects that I can’t speak about (too many of my concepts have been stolen already). I’m also doing some gigs in Europe.

Review: Rennie Foster | Good Time Charlie EP

Canadian producer Rennie Foster comes back on Subject Detroit for his second release there.

Once again, this release is highly influenced by Japanese culture. Rennie is indeed living there since a few years now. He decided to move to Japan after some gigs there, it was love at first sight. The culture, the techno scene and last but not least: two kids (twin daughters, the main source of his inspiration) made him relocate in the beautiful city of Tokyo.

Since then his music is infiltrated by Japanese soundscapes and percussions to make a subtle mix of tribal techno, house and deep melodies…

Following his Subject Tokyo release, from last year, Good Time Charlie is a three tracker with two remixes, one from Aux 88 and one from label owner: Dj Bone.

The original version mixes housey sounds and chopped female vocals to bewitch the listeners. It keeps however a very danceable aspect thanks to the retro piano and the 808 hi-hats…

The remix from Aux 88 is in the pure style of this Detroit electro duo with a strong analog electro beat and bassline. GTC suddenly becomes an ultimate weapon for all the techno and old-school electro dj’s out there.

And finally, the DJ Bone Deep concentration mix, the masterpiece of the record I would say… Bone kept the intensity of GTC and turned it into an epic journey of 12 minutes! The rhythm is hypnotic, the atmosphere is melancholic and the build-up of the elements is meticulously well thought.

Once again an astonishing release from Subject Detroit which has never been so active with ten releases all scheduled for the third quarter of 2008! Don’t sleep on this!

Since Attack #1 I decided not to do track lists of my mixes. This was on purpose in order to motivate people to seek out those elusive tracks that they LOVE but just can’t seem to identify. To make people care about those songs and hopefully fuel anticipation for new music. I felt that the tradition of digging for good songs was kinda lost and most were opting to have their music dictated to them 24 hours a day, no matter where they were (car, elevator, store, market, TV) by conglomerates. I think that those of you who are brave enough to search, email or blog in order to find your music have turned the tide in electronic music!

From now on I will be supplying track lists for all future Attacks. This will hopefully help some truly independent labels sell more good music! Support the labels and artists you love. And if you want to know about songs from past Attacks just email or message me.

The whole reality of actually liking music because it moves you is not a new thing, it’s an ancient vibe, it’s real and more zombies are waking up every day so keep representing.

When you don’t have some of the same opportunities and resources as the next guy (with a backer $$$) it definitely makes things 10 times harder. But when you accomplish the things you never imagined you could without compromising yourself or your art the rewards are 100 times greater.

Now I could sit and complain all day about how uneven the playing field has been forever blah, blah, blah but that alone does me no good. People know how much we have to struggle already. Enough talking, we need doers! We need NEW, funky music to be played by highly skilled DJs. There will always be DJs that are more like cheerleaders, models or posers and good for them. Hopefully they will achieve the level of FAME they’re searching for, that’s just not how I roll.

I want to continue to act by doing my best to push this music forward and keep it exciting, artistic and ahead of what is current. Creativity is free so expect a lot more from me VERY soon.

At a time when oil prices are high, record labels struggle to shift meagre units of vinyl, there is always someone out there willing to stick there neck on the line and fly the flag in the face of adversity. Having never done things by halves, DJ Bone and his Subject Detroit outfit definitely fit the mould. Not merely content with launching the odd release or two, the label is back on the block laying down 10 limited release 12s. With material from fellow cohorts Rennie Foster, Stephen Brown, Trench, Mister X and of course himself, the vibe is strictly 313. As ever, Bone captures and translates the personal to the interpersonal via the likes of Circus World and Subjugation. Not content with imparting his views, the volume of quality music by and large speaks for itself here. He who dares wins?

I know it's been a long time since I've written anything in here. I only do so when I truly need to say something because I really don't think it's necessary to give the world a play-by-play of my every move (like brushing my teeth or buying coffee is important, breaking news to blog about).

First, I want to thank all of you who continue to send me messages that come straight from your heart and soul (you know who you are). I appreciate your words. They make me want to go even further with my missions.

You may have noticed there are several NEW releases out on SUBJECT DETROIT with more coming in the next week or two. I'm very proud of them and want you to know that a lot of hard work and spirit went into every single song. There are limited quantities of all releases on colored vinyl so you better swoop 'em up if you don't already have them. You can check them out at www.subjectdetroit.com

We received a few emails from people who can't find them in their local shops. If your record stores don't carry SUBJECT DETROIT and you need them to, ask them why. The consumer deserves a voice!

As an independent label we rely on payments received from record shops and distributors in order to press and release more product. If we can't get paid, we can't press records...simple as that. So if your local shop isn't carrying it, it might be due to their distributor. They either don't order from us or don't pay us like they are supposed to! A lot of distributors have shut lately. Too much trendy music! Once music trends go cold, distributors are stuck with tons of records they can't sell.

Thanks to your support, Techno is making a HUGE comeback...and of course Detroit Techno never left so I'm proud of all the Techno producers who did not jump ship to join the minimal craze.

Don't get me wrong, I don't hate minimal music. I still love my Rob Hood, Jeff Mills, DBX, D-Knox, H&M and early +8 records ;-) ... but I'm definitely not feelin' the new use of the word minimal as a genre. People act as if the term never existed to define a genre of music before. What a shame.

That's why we try our best to keep SUBJECT DETROIT from being defined by any of those genres. It puts you in a box to make it easier for companies to "market" (or as I say, define) you. That's why in staying with my true Detroit roots I call what we do ADVANCED BLACK MUSIC or ABM. It 's more than a genre or the color of my skin, it's a way of life. I will be rolling out the ABM website and mission very soon to describe what it's about.

Next-up...please vote for YOUR favorite DJs to be in DJ mag's TOP 100!!!
I'm not asking (or begging like a lot of DJs I see) you to vote for me, I am just asking you to vote for who YOU like. I'm tired of seeing the same cheesy DJs up in the top 25 and not seeing the most talented DJs get the respect they deserve for their craft.

Review: Trench Comatose EP

DJ Bone’s imprint comes back after one year without new releases.

It was indeed about time to hear some news about the Subject Detroit crew, and they come back here on the Comatose EP with a brilliant retro-futuristic EP.

Comatose is the very first release of Detroit techno activist Trench. Thanks to the experience gained with more than two decades behind the decks, Trench finally decided to make this Comatose EP. The Original Slumber is an epic journey surrounded by hard percussions. The atmosphere is quite oppressing during the whole track. The climax is sweltering and the pressure is finally released towards the end of the track.

On the second track, Aaron Carl’s remix is haunted by Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Robots Dream of Electric Sheep”. And it seems he couldn’t catch one of those... Aaron delivers a pounding house track with old-school drum sounds and tape rewind effects used in a more contemporary structure.

The third remix by Subject Detroit mastermind: Dj Bone keeps the haunted dreams atmosphere of the original track and even go deeper. Narcoleptic Nightmare is based around a flanged percussion and vocal loop which gives an hypnotic feeling to the track. Bone adds elements regularly such as pads, synth-melody to progress into his nightmare which could haunt several dancefloors.

The ending remix is by Detroit lyricist Donna Black. BlackisBack remix is an hypnotic acid trip driven by chaotic percussions and surrounded by layers of looped vocals. BlackisBack is a brilliant way to end this trip through Detroit darkest mind.

The packaging of the vinyl was also designed, in the pure tradition of Detroit sci-fi design, by Trench and expands into a 24”x36” poster. A must have for all the collectors and Detroit techno music lovers.

Mister X has been there from the beginning…

He was there at the music institute.

He was there at the Hip-Hop shop while Em and Royce were rhyming.

He and Bone were at Derrick May’s as he showed them how his production setup worked.

He was at Record-Time, Buy-Rite and Save the Vinyl.

He made beats for Bugz and Proof as they prepared to become D12.

He was on Planet E records until they decided it was safer to shelve him.

He was mentored by the great and mysteriously off-the-radar Ron Estill.

He worked in the studio where KonArtis, Denaun Porter and DJ Butter toiled.

... and he was at the first 3 DEMFS lurking in the shadows backstage, camera in hand.

Mister X is not a traditional musician-he is a media manipulator. He makes beats, videos, websites and digital art. He makes music in whatever style and genre he chooses. He forces today’s technology to his whims and makes it do his bidding.

Mister X makes music not as a career choice, but as an aesthetic one because not enough people in the industry make the music he wants to hear while others made compromises to their art to get in the game. He waited…and started investigating the internet as an outlet studying mp3 compression and streaming rates back in 1999 learning how one can survive at this without selling their soul while being unapologetically original and unfiltered.

... and now he’s here to change everything-but still he feels his greatest contribution to the world of music was being the man who bought DJ Bone his first turntables…

Dj Bone- No Sleep (True to the Roots)- Sect Records (4.5/5)

Detroit underground legend DJ Bone delivers the first release on Sect Records and hes on firing form with a beautifully crafted selection of warm, harmonic Detroit techno soul with the three tracks on offer here finding their way into the sets of Djs such as Dave Clarke, Ben Sims, Stephen Brown, Dan Curtin, Fanon Flowers, and Rennie Foster. If I had to pick one of the three here it would have to be the title track ‘No Sleep (True to the Roots)’. Classic Detroit synths and Bone’s trademark snares drive this from the off whilst vocals swirl over the subtly evolving synths before the track really goes into overload with the introduction of clattering open hats and atmospheric strings. Electronic soul at its finest! ‘Higher’ is another quality slice of Detroit soul, an epic affair which manages to retain and grow in intensity without the use of a kick-drum. Miss at your peril.

Whatupdoe People!

First of all I want to personally thank each of you for your loyalty and support. It humbles me every time I step to the decks or sit in the studio because I know that all of the love and good energy you send my way is REAL and I always recognize the REAL.

Your genuine word of mouth and grass roots movements are what keep things movin' here and it's help from allies like you that help keep SUBJECT DETROIT 100% independent! This allows me the luxury of remaining offthe radars of trendy magazines, ignoring trendy music genres (ahem) and maintaining my optimum creativity level without having to sell my soul or bullshit you guys.

I love the fact that I can get booked for a high-profile event, go and rock the place with some funky vinyl and unreleased gems on CD and then slip back into obscurity…ninja style. No tap-dancing or buffoonery, just spirit and vibe. It isn't easy though. I have to constantly fight against what Techno has become, I have to hear that my name isn't big enough or that I didn't kiss enough ass to earn the right to be where I am but that shit doesn't phase me…I'm a REAL one, I'm not hearing that bullshit. I know thatthey're just hatin' on the fact that THEY have to do all that shit in order to get gigs and I don't! My strength comes from the music and from the music lovers. Always has and always will.

I'm sending this message out to let you know that I feel the good vibes you send me and that I appreciate all of the messages, emails and support from you. I respect that you choose to have my back and as long as that's the case they can't mess with me, SUBJECT DETROIT or any of our future (top secret) plans to take it back by movin' forward.

I'm off to Croatia today to represent at the Aurora Club (www.auroraclub.hr) but when I return there will be new projects announced, new ATTACK mixes and a brand new movement which I will need your help to initiate, so stay tuned!

There seems to be quite a few technical glitches and dropouts in the mix that was posted on the 3voor.nl site.

So, here is the LIVE recording of DJ Bone's set at Awakefest 08. This recording is the accurate portrayal of what REALLY went down in Area Y between 19:15 and 20:45.

We want to thank the radio crew for providing us with this mix. We also want to thank the hundreds of people that wrote to Bone expressing how his set made them FEEL.
